Considered unmarriageable by many due to her questionable parentage, May has let her hopes for true love fade and devoted herself to a life caring for her ailing aunt. But when May is unable to pay rent on the humble cottage in which she and her aunt reside, she must plead her case to the imposing viscount willing to toss two helpless women in the gutter. A wounded hero of the Peninsula campaign,Viscount Radford Evers is known for his harsh bearing, stubborn pride, and skillful avoidance of wedding vows. But with his family pressuring him to marry and produce an heir, he has little choice but to begin the search for a bride. To this end, he creates a list detailing the perfect wife.  May meets none of the list's criteria, so why does his heart beat madly at the sight of the elegantly shabby miss? He is sorely tempted to toss his list and all that's right and proper into the fire to marry this most unsuitable lady

***SPOILER ALERT***

I was very disappointed in this book--the story line is fairly classic and the characters are decently formed, however the setting and background were terrible! There were several historical discrepancies in the novel--I believe another reviewer has mentioned these already--that were so distracting as to detract from the story. There were also several inconsistencies in the story that didn't make sense and left me concentrating on my confusion rather than enjoying the story. For example, a main theme is the problem of money for the heroine and her guardian--alluded to several times in reference to the heroine's clothing being shabby and faded, however twice the heroine wears dresses that are either new and not worn much or completely new and never worn before. If she is really so strapped for money, why would she have unused gowns to pull from? Also, the background of her family is explained poorly--the entire story her father is played as being a gypsy, then re-described as a bastard son of a Duke? Then to top it all off, in his mysterious appearance at the end he describes himself as a scientist. Also a major formative event in the heroine's life is the disappearance of her parents several years before, but when they magically reappear at the end of the novel, they seem to think they have only been gone for a few years, not 7-8, they also have a 14-15 year old son that the daughter has never heard of? They claim that a 2 year stint in the jungle where they were lost and then waiting on transportation is the cause of their long absence, though this doesn't account for even half of the length they were gone. Lastly, it seems like the author was trying to keep this novel in the clean section of Regency romance, but wanted to try and make it sensually appealing--resulting in a lot of unnecessary and raunchy sexual innuendos by both the hero and heroine. Maybe the author was trying to capture the mind of two people in love? Though she does write several times of how the Earl is attracted to the heroine's feisty spirit, it is clear that mostly he is attracted to her body...since all his private thoughts the readers are treated to center on getting her into bed or rubbing on his thighs. Overall not well done.

The Marriage List by Dorothy McFalls from Books In Motioncom Dorothy McFalls Read by Janean Jorgensen 9781614530312 Books Reviews

As far as regency romances go, I would say The Marriage List was just okay. The two main characters are May, who is described as "squat" with "amber" hair, and Radford, who was injured on the Peninsula and has struggled with his crushed leg and foot ever since. Both Radford and May do everything because of a sense of duty. Radford feels like it's his duty to marry a suitable girl and carry on the family name so that his mother doesn't end up distressed. May does everything in the name of family duty to care for her ailing Aunt Winnie. The two of them are convinced that even though they are attracted to each other, they can never be together because being together would get in the way of their duties. Overall, they were just too similar in personality to make their interactions terribly interesting, and the witty banter for which regency romances are generally known was pretty much entirely lacking. The entire book was pretty much one character going, "I can't be with him/her," and then the other character doing the same. There was a slight secondary conflict built in involving May's uncle, and if that had been played up a bit more, the narrative might have been more interesting. As it was, I just found it bland. Honestly, the most interesting characters in the whole thing were the side characters, Wynters (I don't remember his first name), who was Radford's best friend, and May's best friend Iona--oh, and Princess the horse!

This is also a "sweet" romance, rather than a "sultry" one, which means that the steamiest it gets is some kissing. Now, there's nothing intrinsically wrong with that, but combined with the bland plot and bland characters, I found myself struggling to continue on. I did finish the book, but it didn't really capture my interest like regency romances by some of the greats like Julia Quinn and Lisa Kleypas. This edition also had some typos, missing words, and so on, and could have used a final editing.
